United Counties League Knock-Out Cup
Tuesday 31st March 2015
AFC Rushden & Diamonds v Wisbech Town
AFC Rushden & Diamonds will host Wisbech Town for the second time inside a fortnight when the two sides meet in the semi-final of the United Counties League Knock-Out Cup.
The game is made even more interesting by the fact that the two teams have had two dramatic meetings in the League this season. The first was at the Fenland Stadium, when the Diamonds were 3-1 victors despite ending the game with only 8 men. They then met on 21st March when a late Diamonds equaliser meant the two sides shared the points – report here.
The Diamonds won 7-1 away at Burton Park Wanderers after they entered the competition at the second round stage, and then defeated Wellingborough Whitworth 2-1 in the third round. In the quarter final they defeated Yaxley FC. The winner of the tie will face Potton United at a neutral venue. See here for the full draw.
If the scores are level after 90 minutes then extra-time will be played, with penalties if required after 120 minutes.
This is an “all-pay” game, with Admission prices being the standard league prices – Adults £6, Concessions £3, Under 16 Members FREE, Under 8 FREE.
We shall be employing revised rules for alcohol consumption at the ground for this fixture, and no alcohol will be allowed outside of the bars, and alcohol will not be served after 7.30pm – i.e. neither at half-time nor after the final whistle. In addition, and for this fixture, only the clubhouse bar will not be open to supporters after the match.
See here for more details of these arrangements.
See here for some key dates and data relating to the remainder of the season.
Declan Rogers will be unavailable for this game as he appeared in an earlier round for Huntingdon Town.
Please monitor AFC Rushden & Diamonds Twitter feed (@AFCRD) if the weather conditions suggests the fixture may be in any doubt.
Our Opponents
Wisbech Town are known as the Fenmen, and were formed in 1920, joining the UCL in 1935. They have then moved to the Eastern Counties League, the Midland League, the Southern League and then were relegated back to the Eastern Counties League in 2002 They moved to the Fenland Stadium in 2010, and the ground has covered terracing behind each goal as well as a stand with over 100 seats. At the end of the 2012-13 season they transferred from the Eastern Counties League to the United Counties League rather than taking promotion to Step 4 they had earned by finishing in runners-up spot in that competition.
They are led by Dick Creasey, and they play in all red. Their revised website is here, and the twitter feed is here.
